Maharashtra Anti-Conversion Law Sparks Church Declaration Forms

A new anti-conversion law in Maharashtra has prompted some Mumbai churches to ask worshippers to sign declarations that they attend voluntarily. The law, effective late August, bans conversions by force, fraud, coercion or inducement, and requires advance notification for voluntary conversions. Violations can lead to up to seven years in prison, or 10 for repeat offences. Critics say the broad definitions risk targeting even voluntary religious gatherings.
