The Very Large Telescope in Chile has begun operating with up to seven lasers that create artificial stars in the atmosphere. The lasers excite sodium atoms about 90km up, providing reference points for adaptive optics to correct atmospheric blurring. This marks a first for the observatory and promises sharper views of the cosmos.
