Backpack Wins Alaska's Fat Bear Week in Narrow Vote

A brown bear known as Backpack, or Bear 89, won Alaska's Fat Bear Week, narrowly defeating Bear 910 with 103,344 votes to 98,253. The Katmai National Park contest, now in its 13th year, drew 16 bears and celebrates the fat reserves brown bears need before hibernation, which can last six months.
