Venezuela Quake Towers Built Despite Scientist Warnings

Scientists had warned Venezuela's government against building tall concrete housing towers along La Guaira's coastal strip, citing a major fault line, unstable silt soil and a history of disasters. On June 24, twin 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes struck; at least 14 apartment towers collapsed, killing more than 6,500 people and leaving over 17,000 homeless. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez has done little to address the deaths.
