The Monterey Bay Aquarium, opened in 1984 on California's Cannery Row, has welcomed over 70 million visitors and cared for more than 1,000 stranded sea otters through its Sea Otter Recovery Program, which has surrogate-raised 84 pups for release. Founded with a $57 million gift from David and Lucile Packard, it pioneered local-habitat exhibits and helped inspire the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
