More than three million tonnes of soil excavated during London's Elizabeth line construction was used to create wetlands on Essex's Wallasea Island. Ten years after seawalls were breached, the RSPB reserve recorded a record 39,000 wintering birds, including nearly 800 Avocets and over 10,000 Knot. The wetlands also provide natural flood defences.
