A three-year Leiden University study commissioned by King Willem-Alexander found the House of Orange-Nassau actively supported Dutch colonialism for centuries and shares responsibility for the survival of the slave trade. The royal family profited substantially from colonial trade, accumulating about $650m in modern terms in the 19th century, though it earned almost nothing directly from slavery. The king called the findings painful and confronting.
