Ethiopian government forces and allied fighters have taken control of Mekelle, the capital of Tigray, after the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) said it temporarily withdrew to protect civilians. The TPLF abandoned the city following the recapture of its airport. The fighting, which began on September 23, has raised fears of a wider regional conflict.
