An Omani co-pilot, Hamam al-Hammami, attacked Captain Smit Machchhar on flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, then attempted to crash the Boeing 737 into a Tel Aviv skyscraper, according to an Italian newspaper investigation. After the captain opened the cockpit door, passengers and off-duty pilots subdued him. The plane plunged nearly 16,000 feet before an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Investigators suspect he also tried to shut down the engines.
