US, German scientists win Nobel medicine prize for optogenetics

American Karl Deisseroth and Germans Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel have won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering optogenetics, a method that uses light to control nerve cells. The technique has transformed brain research and may improve cochlear implants. The three will share 12 million Swedish crowns ($1.2m).
