Canada Pauses Assisted Dying Expansion for Mental Illness

Canada will indefinitely suspend plans to expand medically assisted dying to people whose sole condition is mental illness, Justice Minister Sean Fraser announced Wednesday. The expansion had been set for March 2027. A parliamentary panel recommended against it, citing a lack of medical consensus. New legislation will also allow advance consent for patients with incurable illnesses, with provinces deciding.
