Maricarmen Abascal, 87, whose forced eviction from her Madrid apartment sparked nationwide protests, has died, the Madrid Tenants' Union said. She was removed on a stretcher on 23 September after rent rose from €500 to €2,650. Her case triggered protests, a rejected housing bill, and an early election call for 29 November.
