Emerging research suggests temperature may be as important as light in regulating sleep and circadian rhythms. Studies of indigenous groups in Bolivia, Tanzania and Southern Africa found sleep timing tracked ambient temperature rather than light-dark cycles. A 2007 experiment showed fluctuating room temperatures raised overnight melatonin and left participants feeling more refreshed. Scientists caution the ideal temperature drop remains unclear.
