US and Lebanon shelter wanted Syrian general, BBC finds

A BBC and NPR investigation found that Bassam al-Hassan, a former Syrian general wanted for crimes against humanity, is being protected and bankrolled in Lebanon by US and Lebanese authorities. The arrangement, struck in spring 2025, trades residency and payments for intelligence on American journalist Austin Tice's 2012 abduction. Syria's new government wants him tried.
