Astronomers have detected the most distant fast radio burst ever recorded, a flash of radio waves that travelled over 10 billion years to reach Earth. The burst originated when the universe was about 3 billion years old, from a young, metal-poor galaxy forming stars rapidly. It was found using the MeerKAT telescope in South Africa, with its host galaxy identified by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope.
