Hundreds of thousands of students have protested across France since late last month over staff shortages, overcrowded classes and dilapidated school facilities. The unrest, which has turned violent, has become a flashpoint in France's polarised politics ahead of a presidential election. Nearly 7,000 people have been detained, over 85% of them children, and more than 700 police officers injured.
