Norse explorers reached Canada around the year 1000, roughly five centuries before Christopher Columbus, using Iceland and Greenland as staging posts. A Norse transit camp found at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland in 1960 was dated in 2021 to exactly 1,000 years earlier, and is believed to have served as a base for exploring deeper into North America.
