Scientists have measured the top running speeds of hundreds of land animals, revealing which ones a human runner could realistically outpace. A 40-minute 5km time matches a woodland vole, while a 20-minute run compares to a striped skunk or groundhog. Researchers say larger animals are constrained by body mass and cannot reach their theoretical top speeds.
