Newsom Commutes Sentences of All 548 on California Death Row

California Governor Gavin Newsom has commuted the sentences of all 548 people on death row, the largest mass clemency in US history. They will serve life without parole. Newsom said state-sanctioned killing is incompatible with California's values. About two-thirds of the commutations require California Supreme Court review. The move cuts the national death row population by nearly 30 percent.
