The reimagined Commonwealth Games in Glasgow began with a volunteer diving shirtless to fix a pool rope and Mark Swan winning the first gold amid scoring confusion. Despite empty seats, the first day showcased soul, from Botswanan lawn bowler Diza Mphotho's bucket hat to packed arenas. The smaller Games retained a warm spirit.
