Jhandu Kumar wins bronze, opens India's CWG account

Para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar won India's first medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026, claiming bronze in the men's heavyweight category with lifts of 181 kg and 190 kg. Born in Bihar to a vegetable vendor family and affected by polio, Kumar overcame financial hardships and switched from para athletics to powerlifting after being mentored by Paralympic medallist Rajinder Singh Rahelu. His medal capped a day of mixed results for India, including a boxing win for Jadumani Singh and a doping suspension for judoka Tulika Maan.
