France and Spain race to contain wildfires before heatwave

Firefighters in France and Spain are racing to bring huge wildfires under control before another heatwave begins this week. Spain's largest fire on record has burned 50,000 hectares in Ávila, while France's Gironde fire has scorched 42,000 hectares and forced 220,000 evacuations. Officials call the coming days 'absolutely critical' as temperatures are expected to reach 40°C. More than 116,000 hectares have burned in France and 172,000 in Spain this year, far exceeding previous totals, amid warnings of a climate emergency.
