Pet dogs help fight spotted lanternfly invasion in US

Spotted lanternflies, an invasive species first detected in the US in the 2010s, have infested 19 states and cost Pennsylvania's agriculture $50 million annually. The insects devastate grapevines, causing up to 90% crop loss and threatening the $320 billion wine industry. A citizen-science program trains pet dogs to detect egg masses before hatching. The spread is expected to reach California by 2027-2033.
