Thousands return home as heatwave reignites wildfire fears

Spanish authorities have allowed thousands of evacuees to return home after lifting restrictions in Toledo, Madrid, Ávila, and Castellón, including 24,000 in the Madrid region alone. However, Spain and France brace for a fourth heatwave, with wildfires still burning. The Burgohondo fire near Madrid, now the largest recorded in Spanish history at over 43,000 hectares, remains a concern. In France's Gironde region, fires are stabilised but dry winds and temperatures up to 41°C pose risks. A woman died from burns in Almería, adding to 14 previous fatalities.
