Lok Sabha passes anti-paper leak bill amid opposition uproar

The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, by voice vote, introducing stricter penalties including up to 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50 lakh. The bill was steered by Union Minister Jitendra Singh amid sloganeering by opposition MPs. The debate was marked by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's allegations that Home Minister Amit Shah authorised police excesses against student protesters, leading to repeated disruptions and adjournments. Singh noted 52 FIRs have been filed since the anti-paper leak law came into force in 2024.
