Japan quake leaves communities without water, facing heat

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake in southern Japan has left many households without running water or power amid punishing summer heat, with the death toll at 17. Town official Akio Matsushita fears the invisible threats from lack of water and power. The Self-Defense Force is installing about 300 air-conditioning units at evacuation centres, and authorities warn of heatstroke as temperatures near 40°C. Toyota, Honda, and Sony are among manufacturers halting production.
