EU wildfires break severity records as firefighters battle blazes

Fire weather in the EU has broken records for severity this year, with conditions 43% worse than the 20-year average, according to the European Forest Fire Information Service. So far, 435,000 hectares have burned across 1,400 fires—more than double the usual number. Three firefighters died in Greece, while France and Spain made progress against massive blazes. EU officials expect difficult weeks ahead as fires worsen in Italy and Greece.
