Hawaiʻi community's sewer model could protect reefs

A coastal community in Puakō, Hawaiʻi, has developed a low-pressure sewer system as a viable alternative to cesspools, which have been damaging nearby coral reefs. The volunteer-run nonprofit Puakō For Reefs designed the plan, and Hawaiʻi County is now supporting it. Facing a state mandate to convert over 49,000 cesspools by 2050, the county sees Puakō's model as a potential solution for other coastal areas.
