India passes stricter exam leak penalties after student protests

India’s upper house passed legislation doubling the maximum prison term for exam paper leaks to 10 years and raising the top fine above $1 million, after weeks of student protests over leaked tests led to Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation. The bill, cleared by the lower house a day earlier, now goes to President Droupadi Murmu for approval. The protests were spearheaded by the online Cockroach Janta Party movement.
