Scientists survey Mount Ararat glacier for first ice core

A German-Turkish team has completed the first survey of the glacier on Mount Ararat, Turkey’s highest peak, above 5,000 metres, mapping its thickness to find a drilling site for a future ice core. The shrinking ice could preserve continuous layers of climate and human history, from ancient metallurgy to past civilizations. Scientists are racing to extract a core before warming melts the archive permanently.
