Firefighters Race to Contain Athens Wildfire Before Winds Return

Firefighters are racing to strengthen containment lines around a major wildfire west of Athens before stronger winds and higher temperatures return, after burning for a fifth day. The blaze has forced more than 1,000 people to evacuate, including over 250 rescued by boat, and is blamed on a faulty power line from a wind farm. Crews are using water-dropping planes and helicopters and carving fire breaks with tracked earth movers as winds are expected to pick up in the afternoon, a common Mediterranean summer pattern. Authorities have arrested 33 people for starting fires since late June.
