The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Centre to launch a pilot project that would deny fuel to vehicles without valid third-party insurance, noting that nearly 56 per cent of vehicles on Indian roads — 16.54 crore out of 30.48 crore — remain uninsured. The bench also proposed replacing toll-plaza stops with automatic number-plate recognition on select corridors and extended mandatory insurance to four years for new cars and six for new two-wheelers.
