US lawmaker warns FCRA bill could hit India-US ties

A US lawmaker, Congressman Riley Moore, has criticised India's proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, saying they could permit government takeovers of churches and religious charities and warning they could strain bilateral ties. Moore called the bill 'a clear attack against Christians' in a post on X. The legislation, introduced during Parliament's Monsoon Session, would create a Designated Authority to manage assets when FCRA registrations lapse, while reducing maximum punishment for violations to one year.
