Curiosity Finds Massive Field of Honeycomb Fractures on Mars

NASA's Curiosity rover has discovered the largest field of polygon-shaped ground fractures it has ever seen on Mars, in a valley called Valle Grande on Mount Sharp inside Gale crater. The honeycomb-like patterns, each measuring 4-8 cm across, stretch to the horizon and even climb a sand-capped butte nicknamed Miraflores. Scientists are unsure whether they formed from drying mud, freeze-thaw cycles, or compression, but the discovery could offer clues about Mars' watery past.
