Study: 40 Asian oak species lack botanical backup

A study of 54 Asian oak species found that 40 have no living backup in botanical gardens worldwide, meaning nearly three-quarters could vanish if wild populations are lost. One species, Quercus dankiaensis, hasn't been seen since 1934 and may be extinct in the wild. Agriculture is the biggest threat, affecting two-thirds of species. Conservation teams will use the report to guide urgent fieldwork in Vietnam and Laos.
