Parliament on Monday passed the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman clarifying that it imposes no tax or transaction charge on UPI payments, which will remain free for consumers. The Bill also provides legal backing for the government to modify the zero-MDR framework for UPI and RuPay transactions.
