A Syrian court sentenced ousted President Bashar Assad and his brother to death in absentia for war crimes and crimes against humanity during the country's 14-year conflict. The court also sentenced Assad's cousin Atef Najib to death. Assad fled to Moscow after his regime fell in December 2024.
