India's government has approved the RBI's proposal for field trials of polymer banknotes in two denominations, with 2 billion notes planned. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed the Rajya Sabha that the RBI will issue them alongside paper notes if trials succeed. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra targets circulation by FY28.
