Parliament passes bill curbing states' mineral tax powers

Parliament passed the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, restricting states' power to levy taxes on mineral rights and mineral-bearing lands. The Centre will regulate major minerals, while states retain control over 49 minor minerals. Existing taxes not collected before the amendment will be invalid, but amounts already collected won't be refunded.
