OpenAI and developer NEXTDC have abandoned plans to cool the S7 data centre in Sydney with recycled water due to permit issues, opting for a more energy-intensive closed-loop liquid cooling system. The 612-megawatt facility, one of the world's largest, will now use fans that consume more electricity, straining the local grid.
