Tommy John, pitcher who inspired famed elbow surgery, dies at 83

Tommy John, the All-Star pitcher who became the first to successfully return from the elbow surgery that now bears his name, died Saturday at his home in Bradenton, Florida. He was 83. John won 288 games over 26 seasons and his pioneering 1974 procedure has since been performed on thousands of players.
