India is set to import about 1 million tonnes of raw sugar at nil duty for the first time in nearly a decade, as low stocks and high consumption push domestic prices to record highs ahead of the festival season. The move follows a supply shortfall in the 2025-26 season, with ex-mill prices in Maharashtra reaching ₹5,400-5,560 per quintal. Imports aim to ease prices, though experts expect only a modest drop of around ₹500 per quintal.
