Bangladeshi lawmakers elected BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the country's 23rd president on Thursday, securing 255 votes against rival Oli Ahmed's 88. The election, the first contested presidential poll in 35 years, followed the resignation of Mohammed Shahabuddin. Alamgir will be sworn in on Friday.
