India to amend investment treaty to attract global investors

India plans to amend its model bilateral investment treaty (BIT) to allow international arbitration after one year of exhausting local remedies, down from the current five-year requirement. The finance ministry has moved a cabinet note proposing an asset-based investment definition and carveouts for subsidies and compulsory licensing. The move aims to address investor grievances and boost foreign investment.
