Kazakhstan election set to cement president's grip

Kazakhstan held a snap parliamentary election on August 23, 2026, expected to strengthen President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's power. Only seven state-approved parties loyal to Tokayev were allowed to participate, and constitutional changes abolished the upper house and reset term limits, allowing him to run again in 2029.
