Bachelet Quits UN Chief Race After Weak Poll Showing

Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has withdrawn from the race to become the next UN secretary-general after a straw poll gave her just one encouraging vote. Costa Rica's Rebeca Grynspan now leads the contest, which requires nine Security Council votes and no veto from the five permanent members. The winner will succeed Antonio Guterres, whose term ends December 31.
