Maryland's Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, a 19th-Century waterway and Civil War Union supply route, now offers overnight stays in eight historic lockhouses. The National Park Service and C&O Canal Trust opened the lockhouses to guests starting in 2010, each furnished to depict a different era of the canal's nearly 200-year history.
