Data centres turn to light-based photonics to cut power use

Data centre operators are replacing copper wiring with photonics, using light instead of electrons to move data between chips. The shift promises major energy savings because light generates less heat, reducing cooling needs, while also boosting capacity. Nvidia's backing has accelerated adoption, but manufacturing costs, heat sensitivity and global supply chains remain hurdles.
