Reef Sounds Attract Up to 14 Times More Baby Fish

Playing healthy coral reef recordings underwater attracted four to 14 times more larval fish to a site in Kāne‘ohe Bay, Hawai‘i, according to a study in Scientific Reports. Cameras monitored treated and control sites during 2023–2024 spawning periods. The effect was temporary, with larvae dispersing within 48 hours, suggesting acoustic enrichment could aid reef restoration when combined with habitat restoration.
