Experts Warn Rising Rocket Traffic Increases Space Debris Casualty Risk

Experts warn that growing rocket launch frequency is raising the risk of falling space debris killing people on the ground. ESA's Space Environment Report 2026 says the casualty risk from reentering rocket upper stages exceeded four percent in 2024, doubling since 2020. About 124 stages reentered uncontrolled that year, and sustained levels could bring a 33 percent risk of a debris death over the next decade.
